Glorious golden Garuda, massive colorful robes with elaborate embroidery, and ethereal insect wings ... Have you ever witnessed a fashion carnival with such an enchanting blend of ancient charm and whimsicality? This is the annual Jember Fashion Carnival, held every August in the captivating town of Jember in East Java, Indonesia.

The founder of the carnival was the Indonesian designer and educator, Dynand Fariz, stemming from street performances in 2001. On November 1, 2003, it was officially named the Jember Fashion Carnival. Since then, every year amidst waterfalls, beaches, and green hills, the carnival unfolds with extravagant costumes that highlight Indonesian traditional elements, stirring a riot of colors in the world of fashion. Before capturing your soul, it has already dazzled your eyes.
Unfortunately, Fariz passed away in 2019. However, the visual feast he left behind is becoming Indonesia’s national signature. Some say that the Jember Fashion Carnival is not only Asia’s premier carnival but also one of the world’s top three, alongside the Rio Carnival in Brazil and the Rose Parade in Pasadena, Los Angeles. Thanks to Jember Fashion Carnival’s influence, volunteers leading the procession of delegations at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games were adorned in costumes symbolizing Indonesia’s Garuda. There is no difficulty in reaching Jember, as it is located along the main railway artery in East Java, providing direct access to cities in Central Java province. Jember offers a diverse experience, from the lively and festive atmosphere of the carnival to the serene Payangan Beach and the picturesque Tancak Tulis waterfall. The tranquil surroundings, lush greenery, and the soothing sound of crashing waves transport you instantly to a heavenly paradise.
